Do You Need to get Orthotics? Foot pain, as well as knee, hip and back pain, can be very debilitating.
Many people wonder if they should get orthotics when they begin to experience these problems. Orthotics can be beneficial, but only when implemented at the proper time.
When you first begin to experience foot pain, and potentially pain at the knees, hips and back, you should not go run to the nearest store to see which Dr. Scholl’s number you are. This could cause more damage than good.
Why? You are experiencing pain for a reason. This is your body telling you something is wrong. Usually there are joints that are stuck and not moving properly or muscles that are tight and limiting motion which causes pain. If you run to the store and get shoe inserts or go get fitted for really expensive orthotics, not only are you just covering up the issue, you are potentially causing more damage that will make matters worse and more expensive down the road.
So, what do you need to do? Icing and stretching is your first line of defense with these issues. Studies recommend icing for about 15 minutes 2-3 times a day while letting your body warm back up to normal temperatures between icing. This can reduce inflammation and get nutrients to your muscles to heal. Gentle stretching will also help with pain. Studies recommend stretching for about 20-30 seconds, repeating for a second time, and then repeating this process about two more times later in the day. If these measures don’t work after 3-4 days, then it is time to see someone regarding your foot pain.
At Spokane Sports and Physical Therapy we will perform a thorough analysis of all your joints and muscles to see what is going on with you. We will then make a decision to see if orthotics are right for you before you get a pair. After we find the issue, we will develop a treatment program designed specifically to your needs.
Many times you don’t need to go out and get orthotics because we are able to get your joints and muscles moving properly and restore natural motion without having pain. If this doesn’t work, then we will fit you for orthotics. This can be done in our clinic and at 30% less the cost than others who design the same custom orthotics. Come visit us today!
